Child Therapy

Child therapy offers older children a safe place and an opportunity to speak with a trusted, caring and culturally-sensitive adult to learn additional skills to thrive and experience life circumstances with greater confidence. Parent participation allows valuable members in your child’s life to engage in necessary change, while helping to generalize what your child learned in other aspects of their lives .

  • If your child is experiencing:

    Anxiety separating

Facing various behavioral or social challenges at school or home

Struggling to regulate their emotions or mood

    Difficulty sticking to routines

    Challenges with follow-through with instruction

Finds it hard to organize their time and attend to tasks at hand

Facing a new medical diagnosis and need additional support

THEN mental health services may be important for your family! Seek a free consultation today to see how our mental health services could be tailored in support of your family goals.

  • Child therapy occurs weekly and via a virtually and secure telehealth/HIPAA compliant platform through SimplePractice.

Because we know change happens when all important members are involved, we encourage parent participation!

Typically sessions start with a check-in, delves into new strategies needed to promote change such as learning coping skills or problem solving strategies, and transitions into parent participation at the end to allow the child to teach their parent the focus for this week—which promotes generalization of skills at home.

In child therapy sessions, Dr. Sandra frequently leans on evidence-based practices to inform her work while also pulling in child-friendly and fun activities to teach complex topics. Don’t be surprised if you see your child playing games, watching videos, creating art or even singing out loud! It’s all part of the fun and learning! And you can join too!

    How long are appointments?

Sessions take place weekly for 50 minutes

Can others who care for my child regularly join appointments?

YES! Multiple caregivers can join treatment sessions. We simply ask that caregivers interested in joining have consistent weekly availability in order to see the most gains from treatment. Otherwise, one consistent caregiver is also appropriate. Talk with Dr. Sandra to see what works for your family.

  • PCIT can be delivered via Telehealth and works great for generalizing all the skills you are learning in the comfort of your home! We will be using a space familiar to your family and toys familiar to your child and family which can increase your confidence implementing this at home.

    1. Access to two electronic devices—one with video capacity (e.g. iPad or computer) and one with audio capacity (e.g. cellphone with headphones)

    2. Some of your child’s favorite toys (details of which toys may be appropriate will be discussed with Dr. Sandra)

    3. Access to private space for appointments ( Speak with Dr. Sandra about flexibility around how to create this space if not easily available).

    4. One consistent caregiver for weekly appointments.

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is an evidence-based intervention for young children (2-7 years of age) with behavioral concerns and strong emotional outbursts. Parents will have live and direct audio support (e.g headphones), while learning strong positive parenting strategies that help to improve parenting stress, increase parent confidence in responding to their child’s behaviors, reduce behavioral challenges, and bolster the parent-child bond. This unique and dynamic approach ensures that you have live help when you need it most!

PCIT is broken down in to two phases— Phase 1 is centered around increasing warmth and bonding in your relationship, while Phase 2 delves into limit setting and follow-through with directions and rules. We will walk with you every step of the way!
